Kirby Made a Reporter Pucker

Last year, I had the privilege of attending SEC Media Days in my hometown of Atlanta, where I crossed paths with Georgia's head coach, Kirby Smart.

I'd always heard Kirby was an intense coach, and after that encounter, honey, I understood exactly why. Kirby seems to be the kind of man who can smile, speak calmly, and still make a grown man's butthole pucker.

This year, it was Steve Moulton from 97.7 ESPN The Zone in Huntsville who got his turn.

Steve asked Kirby about Georgia's wide receiver room heading into fall camp.

"I wanted to ask about the wide receiver room in particular," Moulton said. "One of the bigger question marks, at least that I have. How would you assess the wide receiver room heading into fall camp?" Oh, snap, Steve. Great question. Wrong delivery, especially for Coach Smart. Prepare to pucker, darlin'.

In only true Kirby fashion, he turned the tables on Steve with just a sharp look, responding to his question about the wide receiver room in a way that only he could.

"I'm just very thankful for people like you, Steve, that keep questioning them, because the more you question them, the more it helps me motivate them," Smart said.

Then he added, "Everybody says that we don't listen to you guys, but the wide receivers are listening. So, they'll have a new challenge issued based on your question."

In Kirby-anese, that translates to: sit your ass down and watch us.

Steve's concern was fair, even if he walked straight into it. Five of Georgia's six leading receivers from the 2025 season have graduated and moved on. London Humphreys is Georgia's only proven returning receiver, finishing last season with 18 catches for 276 yards and three touchdowns, including a 28-yard fourth-down touchdown against Tennessee that helped drag Georgia into overtime before the Dawgs won 44–41.

Georgia also added Isiah Canion through the transfer portal, right down the street from Georgia Tech, where he caught 33 passes for 480 yards and four touchdowns in 2025.

Behind them is a young receiver room filled with talent but very little proven SEC production.

Talyn Taylor, Sacovie White-Helton, C.J. Wiley, and Landon Roldan all have an opportunity to turn recruiting rankings, speed, and potential into something Georgia can depend on every Saturday.

That's the real weight behind Steve's question, and it's exactly why Kirby didn't leave it on that stage in Tampa. He packed that doubt up, took it back to Athens, and served it to his hungry receivers. Y'all know how much them Dawgs love to eat.
